They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them.
-- Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

So my dad loved sailing so much that he's asked for a pair of deck shoes for Xmas and is saving up to go back.

Trafalgar Sailing will have to put up with me once more! (Loving their new website by the way!) Wondering if their trips around the Costa Brava may be more suitable.

Have been looking for a program to decode GRIB weather files under linux. Have looked at Viperfish and Grads but their user interfaces are crap. Really like uGrib, but it doesn't work under Wine. So I'm trying zyGrib on my EeePC.

It's a bit of a PITA really - but eems to work well once installed

So, stupidly early on Monday morning I'm off with the old man to Gibraltar. We'll be heading out on Easyjet (BA sold the route, so I had to pay BA prices for Easyjet seats - Bastards!)

Monday afternoon we'll be heading out into Gibraltar Bay with Trafalgar Sailing to do a shake down - I've been with these guys before, they're awesome. For the rest of the week we'll be cruising the Straits of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea.

I'm experimenting with a service called Hab.la, an add-on to websites which allows people to interface with the Jabber client on my work Laptop/Eee PC etc.

Have added to the script to say where it should all go, what it should say etc.

Have also added a script to auto-translate into English anything the user pops in.

Started off at Ariel with an incredibly cheap diesel engine maintenance course - RYA standard.

Didn't learn much new about the workings of a four stroke - but got to strip down and rebuild a 10hp unit. Unfortunately the ground temperature was freezing, so a lot of WD40 and a hair drier were required to get it going.

I'm about 10 pages into my new Tom Cunnliffe book (Ocean Sailing) and to say my head hurts is an understatement.

So far we've had Greenwich hour angles, local hour angles, declination, altitude, zenith, nadir.....

Am also reading Bruce Schneier's Beyond Fear - highly recommended.

He's actually quite a bit better than I was expecting (apart from the part where he repeatedly mis-quotes someone). Don't agree with all he says though.
